Yes, that's been my assumption also. You actually get 12 partridges and 12 pear trees. Well... if you have a true love.
And if he's insane. I mean, who's gonna pay for all the birdseed, for one thing? And how about the 40 maids a-milking? And who's gonna feed whatever it is they're milking? And who's gonna feed 12 drummers and 22 pipers? (to say nothing of the racket.) Some true love.
On the other hand, 40 golden rings ain't so bad. There's always eBay.
